Outdoor Adventure, Indoor Luxury, Historical Appreciation
Southern Indiana offers a world of excitement for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking wooded trails, fishing deep blue lakes or exploring winding caverns. Yet, it’s also a region marked by sprawling farm land, historical sites and museums.
The options are endless for buyers seeking affordable housing in an area where the cost of living won’t break the bank. River and lakefront properties for sale, rural farms, country homes, land for sale, hunting cabins in the timberland, homes in town … it’s all there in Warrick County and throughout Southern Indiana.
Below is a brief overview of some of the region’s most popular attractions.
The Call of the Wild
Southern Indiana abounds with all types of wildlife, be it fish, fawn or fowl. Mount Vernon’s Hovey Lake Fish & Wildlife Area is set within the Ohio River and Wabash floodplains, and offers excellent hunting opportunities for deer, duck, wild turkey and more. The Glendale Fish and Wildlife Area in Montgomery covers more than 8,000 acres of land and is ideal for fishing catfish, crappie and largemouth bass.
The standout here is the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area, which focuses on protecting migratory birds and the area wetlands, as well as on offering education and recreation to citizens.
There are usually plenty of acres of land for sale, as well as cabins and hunting properties, river and lake fishing properties and other rural homes for sale near these areas.
Deep Discoveries
An official national landmark in Indiana, Marengo Cave holds title as the state’s most visited natural attraction. Visitors can take walking tours or conduct deep explorations, and fearless folks can even sleep overnight in the cave! Vacation homes and cabins are plentiful in the area.
Southern Indiana boasts so many cool caves in fact, that similar attractions include Indiana Caverns in Corydon, Bluespring Caverns in Bedford and Squire Boone Caverns in Mauckport.
Luxury and Resort Life
Looking for a luxurious getaway? Visit arguably the most popular destination in all of Indiana — the French Lick Resort. Surrounded by the beauty of the Hoosier National Forest, this resort features two historic hotels, three golf courses and one of America’s top-rated casinos.
Venture outside the resort for a day to check out Hoosier National Forest … perhaps on horseback.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, there are more than 600 miles of horse trails in the state, and that includes several horsemen’s camps in the forest. It’s easy to find recreational land and farm land for sale around French Lick and the forest.
Come winter, the place to be is Paoli Peaks Ski Resort in Paoli Township. This alpine ski resort has runs for skiers, snowboarders and tubers. While it doesn’t provide overnight lodging, the resort partners with area hotels, cabins and inns for discounts.
Culture and History
Indiana has a rich and storied history, particularly in the state’s southern regions. While there are seemingly endless historical sites and museums to visit, we’ll mention two of the top ones here.
Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville offers a closer look at Native American culture (Mississippian society) 1,000 years in the past. Visitors can explore 600 acres of preserved structures, re-creations, a nature preserve and hiking trails.
The Indiana Military Museum is described as “dedicated to fostering the memory, understanding, and appreciation of U.S. military history.” Located in Vincennes, the museum features a massive collection of military memorabilia, as well as traveling exhibits from other institutions.
Rural lots, country homes, farm land properties and other real estate for sale are plentiful throughout Evansville and Vincennes.
